This page is dedicated to John Thomas 'Jack' Corr and his family and ancestors.

Jack and I were recently in contact after he found me through my website. I am so pleased that it gave him some pleasure in his last months and that I was able to correspond with him. Such a shame that I didn't get a chance to meet the warm and caring person I could sense he was.

Jack's ancestors include the names Madden, Nolan (Aughnashammer), Beggan (Coraleek and Eshnadarragh) and Corr (Dundrummans and Tattymore).

For Jack's family trees click here

Jack tree has two separate connections to Nolan, one through the marriage of Lawrence Madden to Isabelle Nolan (his great grandparents on his father's side) and one through the marriage of Catherine Beggan to Thomas Nolan (his grandparents on his mother's side). As I don't know where the family of Thomas Nolan came from I will stick to the ones from Aughnashammer who married into the Madden family.

I do not know where this Madden family originated or indeed if there was any connection to the Maddens of Springrove. I found two marriages from the Madden family, as below...

  • 24 Feb 1867 – Lawrence Madden of Aughnashammer (son of Patrick and Anne Madden of Aughnashammer) and Isabelle Nowlan of Aughnashammer (daughter of Thomas and Isobella Nowlan of Aughnashammer). Witnesses Richard Madden of Aughnashammer and Edward Callaghan of ? – St. Tierney’s Church
  • 17 Jan 1871 – Richard Madden of Clones (son of Patrick and Anne Madden of Aughnashammer) to Mary Ennis of Clonedergole (daughter of  Dennis and Elizabeth Ennis of Clonedergole). Witnesses William McMahon of Carn and Eliz Jane Ennis of Clonedergole. – Sacred Hearth RC Church, Clones.

I also found children from the marriage of Lawrence and Isabelle in the St. Tierney's Church records, as below (These were the only Madden entries).

  • 1867 29 Oct - Anne Madden in Aughnashammer - Godparents were Patrick and Bridget Madden.
  • 1869 23 Jul - Mary Madden in Aughnashammer - Godparents were Richard Madden & Catherine Nolan
  • 1871 22 Jul - John Madden in Rosslea - Godparent entries not available
  • 1875 10 Jun - Thomas Madden in Aghnashalvy? (probably meant Aughnashammer) - Godparents Hugh and Mary Anne Quigley

In the Sacred Heart Church, Clones records I found one Madden birth, although I do not know if it is related to Jack's Maddens.

  • 1871 17 Jun - Eliza Madden in Cladone - Parents: Mary Anne Moore (no father listed) - Sponsor was Catherine Moore. This child was entered as illegitimate.

Below is a photo of Jack Corr's Great Grandmother, Isabella (Nolan) Madden (back left), along with her daughters and grand-daughter. This Isabella was married to Lawrence Madden of Aughnashammer.

Below is a photo of Mr and Mrs Madden of Aughnashammer. I am not sure which of the Maddens these are but the woman looks to be the same as the photo above (the girl to the right).

There are references to the name Madden in the Roslea Journals:

One in reference to forts that were the homesteads of Celtic famers in the Iron Age... "The biggest fort at Rathkeevan was excavated by Isobella Madden at the beginning of the century, and the remains of bones of adults and children were found. Perhaps these settlements were used as burial sites at a later stage".

Another in reference to the lace industry... "In 1893, the Irish Industries Association was formed with Vicereine, Lady Aberdeen, as president and she, together with Miss Isabel Madden of Springrove, set about a revival of the art".
