The Crudden family I am concentrating on for now is the one associated with my Lynch family. This is the family of Samuel Crudden of Arnot's Grove who married Anne Lynch (dau. of Patrick Lynch and Ann Magennis (probably variant of McGuinness). Family outline is below...
........2 Patrick Lynch - 1832 *Brother of my GGG Grandfather, Bernard Lynch*
............+Ann Magennis
...................3 John Lynch
...................3 Luke Lynch
...................3 Frank Lynch
...................3 Bernard Lynch
...................3 Catherine Lynch
...................3 Bridget Lynch
...................3 Ann Lynch Abt. 1832 –1921 *Birth from census, death from gravestone*
.......................+Samuel Crudden Abt. 1818– Bef. 1911 *Est. birth year from gravestone*
.............................4 Edward Crudden 1854 – 1934 *Emigrated to New York in 1888 and returned to Ireand in 1922*
.............................4 Francis Crudden Abt. 1856 -
.............................4 John Crudden 1860 – 1951
.................................+Anne Quinn *Married in 1909 at Mullingar*
.............................4 Mary Anne Crudden 1864 -
.............................4 James Crudden 1866 – 1916
.............................4 Catherine Crudden 1867 –
.............................4 Bridget Crudden 1870 – 1954
.............................4 Ellen Crudden Abt. 1870 - *This birth appears in the Clones baptism records*
.............................4 Ellen Crudden Abt. 1884 - *This is the estimated birth of Ellen from the 1911 census. I do not know if there were two Ellens born to Samuel and Anne, if they had Ellen's age wrong in the census or if the first Ellen died young*

In the Tithe Applotments 1823 - 1837 there is no mention of Arnot's Grove townland at all. I do not know if it was maybe known by another name at that time, or maybe it came out of another townland like an off-shoot. The only Crudden names in the Tithe Applotments for Clones Parish are James Crudden in Lammy and James Crudden in Rateen. There are also McCudden names, Edward (Tattinbar), George (Knox), John (Aughafin) and Mick (Mullabrady). I don't know if McCudden is a variant for Crudden.
In the Griffiths Valuation 1848 - 1864, Samuel Crudden is listed in Arnot's Grove along with Gunn, Kearns, McCaffrey, Monaghan and Scallon. Other townlands where Cruddens are listed are James in Killylifferbane, James in Lammy and Margaret and Richard in Loughgare. I don't know if these other Cruddens are related to Samuel or in what way.
In 1882 an article in the Irish Times on the new land act settlements listed the estate of a Mrs Anne Dawson of County Fermanagh. Among the townlands listed is Arnot's Grove and Samuel Crudden is listed there as tenant. The area of land was 30a 2r 25p (I do not know at this time what it all means but I will attempt to find out). The poor law valuation was £18 15s, the old rent was £21 19s and the new judicial rent was £15 2s 9d. Samuel is listed again, this time with an area of 8a 3r 10p, valuation of £5 15s, old rent £6 5s and new judicial rent of £5 10s. Other names listed in Arnot's Grove in 1882 were:
Owen Gunn
Thomas Kearns
Sarah Kearns
Patrick Kearns
James McCaffrey
Susan Scallon
Other Crudden names in the 1882 article are Bernard Crudden of Lammy and Rose Crudden of Kilturk Beg.
This document from the Land Commission of 1898 shows Anne Crudden as Admix of Samuel Crudden's deed living at Arnott's Grove. Their landlord was Miss Maude Hamilton.
This is the Crudden family in Arnot's Grove in 1901. Children not listed here, or in the 1911 census, are John, James and Edward. John may have been elsewhere as he served in the R.I.C. I found a James Crudden in Cornacreeve, Monaghan who was 47 so around the right age. This James is listed as born in Fermanagh and appears to be living with his brother, Patrick. James next appears on the Crudden gravestone. I am told that John lived in Cornacreeve some time after he married in 1909 so there seems to be a link between these Cruddens. Edward's absence from the censuses is more easily explained as Edward had gone to USA in 1888. He applied for a passport in 1922 and was living in New York. You can view Edward's passport application further down on this page.

Below shows some of the family living in Arnot's Grove in 1911. Samuel had died in February 1898. The age descrepancies are interesting. Francis, who was listed as 37 years in 1901, has aged by 18 years in the space of only 10 years and yet Mary Anne has only aged by 7 years. This is one of the reasons we have to keep an open mind when using census data.

Samuel and Anne's son John is not listed at Arnot's Grove in 1911. John was married to Anne in 1909. The photo below is of their wedding day. John Crudden can be found in the R.I.C. stationed in Meath. He is entered simply as J C and is 51 years old, living at 57.1 Dunshaughlin Town, Meath. His wife Anne (nee Quinn), aged 29, is listed with their son, Joseph Gerard, aged 0, at 57.2 Dunshaughlin Town, Meath. John and Anne were married in the Parish of Mullingar on 9th June 1909. Their witnesses were Thomas Cooke and Mary Anne Flanagan. According to information from a descendent, John and Anne lived in Monaghan at some point after they married and then returned to Fermanagh after a number of years.
Thank you to Ed Crudden for the photo

Below is the passport application for Edward Crudden. This includes a photo of him.
Edward came back to Ireland and remained at Arnot's Grove. He appears on the Crudden gravestone.
According to a family member "he initially joined the RIC at a very young (fictitious?) age and then transfered to the British army.I think he served in The Life Guards He served in campaigns in Africa. When he left the army he moved to the USA where he worked as a Coachman and in the Tombs prison in New York among other things. He also served in the American army during the Spanish Amercan War 1898.He returned home to Ireland circa 1922 and died in 1934."

Edward's passort application states that he was naturalised on 30th June 1893. You can see his naturalisation record below.
Once naturalised in New York, Edward Crudden didn't waste any time setting out to establish himself. By 1894 he was running for Mayor of the City of Perth Amboy, New Jersey. The following news clippings are evidence of that. Thanks to Sean Corr who sent me them. Unfortunately, Edward was not successful in his campaign but the news clippings mean more than just a story to me. They show the determination of the Irish to succeed in a foreign land. Many went on to become pillars of their new community and hold high positions both in the church and in politics, in fact any position they had, they embraced it and took it to the highest level possible. They certainly worked hard for what they achieved!
Below is the gravestone for Samuel Crudden and his wife Anne (Lynch) along with their sons James and Edward. This gravestone is at St. Macartan's Church, Aghadrumsee graveyard. You can see more Crudden gravestones at the bottom of this page, thanks to Ciaran Potter!

In 1961 there are Crudden names mentioned on a photo of a football team. The photo is of the Aghadrumsee Fermanagh Senior Champions. Jim Crudden and Enda Crudden were part of that team.
