This page is dedicated to Michael Joseph McCabe and his family. I have been in touch for some time with a lovely lady and friend who has very kindly allowed me, not only to have a glimpse into her Grandfather's life but also, to access some of her photos and family memories in order to document his life. Michael Joseph certainly had a colourful life, going from a life in a small village in Ireland to find his fortune in a land far away. His fine family are a testiment to his bravery, determination and success.

The following is a recording of Michael Joseph McCabe in his later years as he remembers leaving Ireland.
|
| Michael Joseph McCabe was born on 23rd December 1892 (youngest of 10 children, 5 boys and 5 girls) in the townland of Derrylea (Parish of Clones), near Scotstown in County Monaghan. His mother and father were Michael McCabe and Anne Connolly. His mother died around 1895 and his father took him under his wing and the two were very close. |
| In about 1911, at the age of about 19, Michael began working for Canon Michael McGlone who was the Parish Priest of St. Tierney's Church in the nearby town of Roslea, just over the border in County Fermanagh. He worked for the Canon in the stables, looking after the horses and according to a reference written by the Canon, he was very good at his job. |

Here Michael Joseph talks about Canon McGlone |
In 1913 Michael decided he wanted to see more of the world and headed off to make his fortune in Canada. You can hear about his leaving Ireland, his passage to Quebec and his first landing on Canadian soil in the first audio clip (at the top). Michael Sr. mentions two people who wanted to stick around with him. Monica has told me that their names were Hugh McNameel and Pat Connolly and that they were also from Ireland. He also talks of the Jesuits who gave him a warm welcome when he arrived in Canada. Perhaps that had a big impact on him as one of his sons, James McCabe, became a Jesuit Priest and often visited Ireland on his way to an Indian Missionary. Fr. James McCabe recorded a journal from one of his visits to see his family. I will quote from these journals later on.
On 17th May the RMS Pretorian set off from Glasgow in Scotland, bound for Montreal, Quebec in Canada. On 18th May the Pretorian stopped at Moville, Ireland to take on passengers. Michael Joseph McCabe was among those who boarded that day. |

| Below you will see some photos of Michael Joseph McCabe soon after his arrival in Canada and while working on the farm. Also some photos of his descendants and relatives. All this information and media has been very kindly given to me by Michael's Grand-daughter Monica McCabe. Monica has generously allowed me to use these on my site and I would like to say a big thank you to Monica and indeed her family for letting me have the honour of representing her family name on my site. |
