Joseph
Edward McConville, known to all as Edward, 'Ned' and 'Eddie',was born abt. 1927 (probably in Tandragee, County Armagh), to
Mark and Susan McConville. He came to England in the 1950s along with his
brother, John, and worked in different parts of the country, including Leicester
and Hounslow, before joining John, who had, by 1955, emigrated to Queensland,
Australia. He never married and wasn't the romantic type. He was more interested
in building things and oil painting. He could build and fix just about anything
and was known as the artist of the family. Two of his paintings were mounted at
either side of the altar in St. Tierney's chapel, Roslea, County Fermanagh, for
a number of years in the 70s.
In
the late 1960s he was living in lodgings in Lavender Gardens, Battersea, close
to his brother, Mark and working nearby. He suffered 2 heart attacks during this
time and spent time in Bolingbroke Hospital, Clapham. Eventually, in the early
1970s, he went home to Annashanco to look after his mother, who was now on her
own, after her two adopted children, Patsy and Mary, had left home and were
making a life for themselves. As Joseph was not married, this seemed to best
option. He remained in Roslea and made a living building and repairing things
for the locals. On 1st July 1975, Patsy McPhillips sent my Uncle Mark a telegram as Joseph was
seriously ill. Joseph died later the same day, aged 48.
